I had so much fun making this place up. Based mostly on my previous painting "Goerschneresque". The challenge was making it look like it could exist somewhere on our planet. Don't know if I pulled it off, but I sure would like to go there, where ever it is.

Orchids

This is my third 18 x 24 incher in a row. I do like this size. Usually I paint on linen on board but this time I tried painting right onto a primed board. It was a very different painting experience. The paint just slid on, real smooth, no teeth to hold the paint. I haven't decided yet whether or not I like it.
These orchids were inspired by a book of botanical illustrations that I have by Alexandre Brun. A beautiful collection called The Forgotten Orchids. I might do a few more from the book.
I see there is some glare in the photo. I'll see if I can correct that at a later time.

Street Talk

I like to imagine the conversation the woman with the bag and and the person in the window are having. Are they merely greeting each other, engaging in neighborhood gossip, or perhaps they are arguing.
I have started painting bigger and am really liking it. For the longest time I was intimidated by the big canvas. It being such an investment in time and materials, I'd be so upset when the painting didn't work out. And while I still am, it is really fun to work big and in a strange way it is easier.

Bananza Troop Trailer

Here is the latest game app we developed. Brilliant Charles Whitley did an amazing job with all the coding. My awesome nephew Jesse A. Lopez and I did all the graphics. The magnificent Kristin Shand Turner wrote the original score, "Theme From Bananza Troop" which is what is playing in the trailer. It is currently in review and should be available within a week or so. Our website www.bananzatroop.com has more info. Getting this game out has taken me away from painting but it was worth it. I think it is really fun to play and great to look at.

I have been reading through Ted Goerschner's Oil Painting the Workshop Experience the past couple of weeks. I have been copying all of his paintings trying to learn how he achieved certain results. Needless, to say, I really like his paintings. Anyway, this is the final one I did. It is my favorite in the book. I think it turned out pretty darn good. Now I hope I can take what I learned and incorporate into my own images and paintings.

Into the Tunnel

This is another painting challenge. It's from http://adaynotwasted.com, but it is from last December. I have wanted to do this painting as soon as I saw it as it is such a reminder of my childhood. For those few of you who don't recognize it, it is NY's Central Park. They have these bridges with tunnel pathways all over the park. They always intrigued me. A little bit scary a little bit exciting.

Street Jazz

This is a New York City street musician. The streets of New York are always so full of life and one reason is the frequency of live music on a corner, in a park, on a subway platform. This guy has apparently been around for years.

Around and Around

While looking at this painting I noticed that my eyes kept going around and around the painting starting at the bottle, down the flower stem to the first apple, up to the second apple and back to the bottle, down the stem, and over and over again. I hope you don't get dizzy.

I'll be hanging some of my art Tuesday March 1 at the Scooters in South Austin. My painting buddies Deborah, Ruthie and Sandra will have work up too. It will be there until the end of April. So maybe you'll get a chance to stop by and see it in person.

The White Ewer

This is the first painting I've done in a long time. It's good to be back. I like the looseness of the brush work and even though there is hardly any white in the painting I think it "reads" as a white pitcher.

I have been gone from painting for a long time but I have been busy learning Adobe Illustrator. My husband and I have been developing Iphone/Ipad apps. This one is called Pop Dem Reps, and is our first. You choose to be a Democrat (donkey) or a Republican (elephant) and try to pop your opponent. Teapots come along and cause all sorts of trouble. It's a simple but fun game. Our nephew Jesse A. Lopez (a great graphic artist) did most of the game art. But I did the bottom two screens. I have exciting news. I am in a show at Scooters in South Austin. I am showing with two beautiful artists Suzanne Stewart and Deborah Thomas. If you have a chance to check out the show, it is up until Oct. 30th, I promise you won't be disappointed.

I have no painting to post. I have been busy learning how to use Illustrator and having a blast. I have been "painting" cute little cartoony objects and landscapes and never once had to wash a brush, scrape a palette, or scrub under my fingernails. But I must admit I miss real painting and am planning on getting back to it very soon.

Lost Pot

I was really trying to lose the edges of the copper pot into the background and still give a sense of form. I love the mystery of lost edges but it is so hard to do. I have to constantly "be still" my hand while it tries to record every detail.

I decided to work on this on some more. I was unhappy with the flower on the left. It was too bright and it was calling to much attention to itself. It thought it was the subject of the painting and not the pot with flowers. It 's still a bit loud but better.

Here is another limited palette painting. This time I used sap green, alizarin crimson and white. Ooops, I lied, I also used a little cadmium yellow pale. One of my followers commented that painting is like playing music. It's all in getting the intervals right. Be it notes or colors.
Limiting the palette sure helps to keep those color notes harmonious.

I've been doing a number of paintings using a limited palette. It really makes me focus on the value structure and the warm and cool within those values. It's been a great exercise.
I only used 3 colors for this one blue, orange and white.

As I was painting this I kept thinking the colors were wrong. But I just kept on, resisting the urge to correct until I had filled in the whole canvas. I was so pleased to discover that the colors worked once they were all in place.

This one started out on a 6 x 6 piece of linen. I really liked it and tried to mount it on a panel and realized it was not square but a parallelogram. I tried to trim it square but only managed to make it smaller not squarer. Oh well, it is a lesson learned.
